The percentage of children with a father in prison increased 58 percent between 1991 and 1999. Also increasing is the call for programs that address the needs of fathers and their families. This brief, authored by Child Trends researchers for the federal National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse, is based on a review of 20 such programs and on the similar characteristics shared by the four “model” programs that showed evidence of positive effects. Those characteristics included providing staff training, teaching incarcerated fathers important skills and providing incentives for fathers and families to participate. (877) 4DAD411.
