The U.S. child poverty rate in 2007 was the highest it has been since 1998, according to the Census Bureau’s most recent Current Population Survey. Although U.S. household incomes increased for the third straight year, the overall poverty rate did not change. However, for children younger than 18, the poverty rate increased from 17.4 percent (12.8 million children) in 2006 to 18 percent (13.3 million children) last year.
