More than 5,300 13- to 24-year-olds in the United States contracted HIV/AIDS in 2006, according to the CDC. More than half of the total estimated 56,000 cases of new HIV infection in 2006 were among gay and bisexual men. Within that group, black males ages 13 to 29 were roughly twice as likely to become infected as young white and Hispanic males. Black men and women together accounted for 46 percent of all new HIV infections. Black women of all ages were almost 15 times as likely to contract HIV as white women, and almost four times as likely as Hispanic women.
