Incarcerating youths as adults does not reduce crime and disproportionately affects youth of color, according to this study, released in conjunction with the launch of The Campaign for Youth Justice. The campaign is calling for a nationwide ban on the trying, sentencing and incarceration of anyone under 18 in the adult criminal justice system.
The study presents research, statutory analysis and case studies that highlight problems associated with treating juveniles as adults in courts, jails and prisons. It examines laws and data for seven key states: California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin. Free. 104 pages.
