Getting Out the Youth Vote in Local Elections: Results from Randomized Field Experiments

The survey examines the impact of get-out-the-vote campaigns on the voting patterns of people under 25. Volunteers from Youth Vote coalition member organizations contacted potential voters at six sites on the nights leading up to the November 2000 election, urging them to vote. A controlled comparison shows that contact with the volunteers increased voter turnout by an average of 10.9 percentage points. The one-time canvassing produced a 2.1 percentage-point jump in turnout of voters under 25, which Youth Vote says would be improved with more aggressive campaigns. 26 pages. Free.
