About the Position
MENTOR is committed to using research to improve the quality and quantity of mentoring programs for youth across the nation. The Research Manager will support MENTOR’s original research-related projects, which include both original research studies and the translation of mentoring research into a variety of formats for use by mentoring programs nationally. The primary goals of this position are to help mentoring professionals better understand and make use of research findings and to help grow MENTOR’s ability to conduct original research to build knowledge about the youth mentoring field. The Manager will support a wide variety of projects, including the federally-funded National Mentoring Resource Center, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers and evaluators around the country and internationally.
Responsibilities
- Collaborating with MENTOR’s Director of Research and Evaluation on conceptualizing and executing research-related projects.
- Contributing to research syntheses, authoring blog posts about key new research, and developing tools for use in the mentoring field that build on research findings.
- Coordinating working groups and contributing content to new research-to-practice products, such as new versions of The Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring.
- Helping produce reports from MENTOR’s original research, including field surveys, market research, and evaluations of MENTOR-led initiatives.
- Conducting literature searches, reviews, and synthesis, as needed to support the training, government relations, and public awareness work of the organization.
- Supporting MENTOR’s network of Affiliate organizations in data collection and
- Presenting to virtual and in-person audiences about the work of MENTOR and other mentoring topics as needed.
- Supporting MENTOR’s research work with external partners, including contract execution and tracking of project and partner deliverables.
- Building and maintaining a database of mentoring research articles and reports using bibliographic software.
Qualifications

- Strong understanding of youth mentoring programming and research, or research from related fields such as education, after school services, or youth development broadly.
- Demonstrated knowledge of program design and implementation for youth-serving organizations or interventions. Experience in direct service youth work is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to search for scholarly literature using databases of peer-reviewed journal articles, research clearinghouses, and general web searches.
- Exceptional writing skills, preferably with experience writing about scholarly topics for audiences that include practitioners and laypeople.
- Experience planning, supporting, or conducting qualitative research is a
- Strong interpersonal skills, particularly in working on highly collaborative projects across
- Experience supporting or writing about program evaluation or research
- Effective communication skills, particularly in providing information, resources, and other assistance to youth-serving organizations.
- Strong organizational skills, including a track record of balancing and prioritizing multiple projects and partner priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to work with partners effectively in both virtual and in-person
- Ability to travel to conferences and events (≤5% of FTE).

We hope to have phone interviews in early November with select candidates. Candidates who advance will have a virtual interview with Mike Garringer, Director of Research and Evaluation. Finalists will be selected for a virtual interview day with MENTOR staff. Candidates advanced to offer can expect a background check and holistic reference check process. The expected start is January 2022.
This position is full-time remote-hybrid with up to 5% national travel. For candidates who are based where MENTOR National has offices (Boston and Washington D.C.), MENTOR asks all employees to work in the office 2 days a week or 8 days a month. Slight preference will be given to candidates in the Greater Boston area.
Compensation and Benefits
MENTOR offers a competitive salary for all staff positions. The exact salary that will be offered will be determined based on a consideration of the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and geography and aligned with MENTOR’s compensation policies. Salary range for this role is $55,000-$60,000 and it comes with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, 403B, pre-tax transit, generous vacation, and life and short- and long-term disability insurance.
