Karen Savage, a recent New York-based reporter for JJIE and Youth Today, has received The Sidney Hillman Foundation Award for Social Justice Reporting.
The award is given annually to a student graduating from the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism who has shown the greatest commitment to social justice reporting over the course of the program and who is deemed most likely to continue reporting on social justice issues as a career journalist.
A number of articles Savage wrote for the two publications were among those honored.
“It was a huge honor, but it was really a team effort that included Daryl, Marco and all of you down there who have been so great to work with,” Savage said, referring to Daryl Khan, the JJIE New York bureau chief; photographer Marco Poggio, another CUNY student, and other editorial staff.
The award is named for Sidney Hillman, the founding president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America and co-founder of the CIO, who fought tirelessly to build a vibrant union movement extending beyond the shop floor to all aspects of working people’s lives. Since 1950, The Sidney Hillman Foundation has honored journalists who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling in service of the common good via their annual Hillman Prizes and monthly Sidney Awards.
