The Forum for Youth Investment (FYI)
These eight principles for engaging youth as partners in community change can help organizations and communities ensure that all youth, particularly those who are disenfranchised, believe they have the responsibility and resources to improve their communities. The report discusses each of the principles: designing an aggressive outreach strategy; creating a strong home base; identifying core issues; conveying an intentional philosophy; creating youth/adult teams; building youth and adult capacity; providing individual support; and sustaining access and influence.
It also offers key ideas, examples of the principles in use and questions to help organizations hone their civic engagement strategies. The principles emerged from FYI’s collaboration with Nashville-based Community IMPACT! USA to document that group’s Youth Mobilizer approach to civic engagement. Free. 32 pages.
