Seeking to combine the potentially idle summer months with youth volunteerism, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is appealing to local youth-serving agencies to join its Summer of Service 2007.
In collaboration with USA Freedom Corps, CNCS is stoking up efforts to recruit 5- to 21-year-olds by awarding presidential certificates for community service hours, and shouting to the rooftops about research that says service learning bolsters leadership skills.
The campaign provides curriculum guides and tool kits to help youth leaders and organizations incorporate service learning into local projects. While the toolkit is targeted toward summer camp program staff and small groups of youth, other resources are available for larger efforts. Contact: http://www.nationalservice.gov.
