“I want to do something with my life. That has nothing to do with me being black,” says one youth interviewed for this DVD and discussion guide. In Changes, CRU broaches a subject that is tough to talk about: the frustration that academically successful black youth feel when they are deemed to be “acting white.” The video begins with a stream of black teens venting on the subject, and moves quickly to a mediation session between a boyfriend (taking honors classes) and girlfriend (resenting what she perceives as superiority). Using techniques that are highlighted in a video appendix for viewers, the two mediators help the girl see how sad it is to correlate academic skills with whiteness and poor academic skills with being black.
