The Vatican has disseminated new rules for secret church-run courts to try priests facing allegations of molesting children. The letter, sent to all Roman Catholic bishops and heads of churches, instructs any leader aware of “even a hint” of molestation to open an investigation and immediately inform Rome. The rules bear no direct influence on civil cases, although they may be used to determine which priests could expect legal defense support from the diocese.
