The “New” Tube: A Content Analysis of YouTube – the Most Popular Online Video Destination

Parents Television Council (PTC)

Children’s exposure to lewd television content may expand beyond the realm of just the television set.  A Parents Television Council report finds the popular video entertainment website, YouTube, provides youths with easy access to what it deems as offensive content.

The group’s analysis of 280 of 2008’s most popular YouTube videos found that while the site appears to have proper measures in place to prevent underage access to adult videos, even some appropriate videos still contain curse words in the accompanying text commentary, links to pornographic sites and inappropriate advertisements.

The report praised YouTube for introducing new, stricter procedures to determine which videos qualify for age-specific viewing, but called for a still tighter policy regarding the material that accompanies the videos.
