Juvenile Justice

Former Luzerne, Pa. County Juvenile Judge Mark Ciavarella was sentenced to 28 years in federal prison today for his role in the so-called “cash for kids” scheme. Ciavarella, who was convicted in February of racketeering, conspiracy and fraud after withdrawing from an earlier plea agreement, apologized in court but again denied he was involved in a “cash for kids” agreement, Craig McCoy of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Earlier, letters written to the court concerning Ciavarella’s sentencing were released by the judge, WNEP television station.

Child Welfare

Family advocates say Nebraska takes too many children out of their homes and into state custody in alleged abuse and neglect cases. WSLS reports that a delegation of family advocates met Wednesday with Nebraska Department of Family and Children Services officials.
