Can I Get a Little Advice Here? How an Overstretched High School Guidance System Is Undermining Students’ College Aspirations

Public Agenda

This report examines the high school guidance system through the eyes of its former customers and concludes that it is “perilously weak.” Among other things, the report – based on a survey of 614 young adults with some post-secondary education – found that most young adults gave their high school guidance counselors fair or poor ratings on areas such as helping them think about different careers, decide which college to attend, pay for college and navigate the application process. And nearly half said they felt like “just another face in the crowd.”

The goal of the report is to generate innovative thinking about ways other institutions and other entities could lend a hand.
