Children Living with Substance-Dependent or Substance-Abusing Parents: 2002 to 2007

U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

Five years of face-to-face interviews with thousands of parents led the federal government to estimate that about 12 percent of children live with a parent who was dependent on or had abused drugs or alcohol during the previous year. Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health Report, SAMHSA concluded that 8.3 million children under 18 had at least one parent who was dependent on or abused alcohol or an illicit drug at some point in the previous year. The agency conducted interviews with 90,000 parents between 2002 and 2007. Free, four pages. (240) 276-1212, http://oas.samhsa.gov/2k9/SAparents/SAparents.pdf.
