Number of Teen Shooting Deaths Drops to Decade Low

The Sacramento Bee

The number of Sacramento County teens who have been killed in 2008 is the lowest in at least a decade, and the number of teen shooting cases is down by about one-third since last year. Officials are crediting an expansion of police techniques to battle street gangs, as well as organizations like the Roberts Family Development Center, which provides counseling and education to youth.

However, gang investigators and youth counselors warn that gangs are growing in the region and much work still needs to be done. Both the city of Sacramento and the surrounding county recently considered increasing the sales tax to pay for prevention and enforcement efforts, but both initiatives failed.
