2008 International Internet Trends Study

 

This classification analysis of more than 3 million unique URLs worldwide by web content security vendor Optenet finds a significant increase in the amount of inappropriate content on the Internet between 2006 and 2007. The group found that pornography continues to represent the largest portion of the Internet (35 percent), despite a slight decline from 2006. Within this category, content related to child pornography grew 18 percent from 2006 to 2007.

Websites promoting anorexia and bulimia have increased by a huge 470 percent since the end of 2006. Sites associated with violent content increased by 125 percent during the same period, while those promoting racism and drug use increased by 70 percent and 62 percent, respectively.
