There are more than 7 million lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) parents with school-age children in the United States, and research shows they are more involved in their children’s education and school experiences than are their peers. However, many feel ignored or mistreated by school personnel and other parents.

According to this report, taken from surveys of 588 LGBT parents and 154 youths with LGBT parents, conducted during the summer of 2005, nearly one-fifth of the youths reported hearing negative or anti-gay remarks from classmates, and about one-third heard negative remarks from school staff. The report suggests measures that schools should take to foster a welcoming and accepting environment, such as training staff in issues of diversity and having a no-tolerance policy toward bullying and discrimination.
