Federal Tax Benefits: Foster, Adoptive Parents and Kinship Caregivers

National Foster Parent Association (NFPA)

According to the NFPA, “neither the Internal Revenue Service nor commercial tax manuals offer information on unique tax rules that affect [foster, adoptive and kinship] families.” This guide provides alternative caregivers with valuable information on ways they can claim the tax deductions and credits available to them. While the information should not be considered direct legal or tax advice to families, the NFPA urges families to discuss the qualifications for the benefits with professional tax advisers. The guide, which focuses on low- to moderate-income families, includes links to all necessary forms. Free, 26 pages. (253) 853-4000, http://www.nfpaonline.org/uploads/2007_Federal_Tax_Benefits.pdf.
