Focal Point: Traumatic Stress/Child Welfare

Research and Training Center on Family Support and Children’s Mental Health

The winter 2007 edition of the semiannual magazine Focal Point highlights child traumatic stress. Focusing on children in the foster care system, it looks at the trauma of domestic abuse and neglect, as well as stress induced by the child welfare system. The reports emphasize early intervention, with discussions about evidence-based treatments, trauma and abuse-focused cognitive behavior therapy, parent/child interaction therapy, parent and child psychotherapy, and special considerations for American Indians and Alaskan natives. The issue concludes with suggestions for creating a more “trauma-informed” child welfare system and thoughts on the role of public policy. Free. (503) 725-4040, http://www.rtc.pdx.edu/PDF/fpW07.pdf.
